Anti Virus Update
by Bob Thomson, rjthomson@home.com
If you haven't checked out our website, toggle.org, you should. Ray Mills has put a Virus Hot List button on the TOGGLE Home page. Pressing that button takes you to a Virus advisory page with links to Norton AntiVirus program and signature updates. No password is needed.

If you already have Norton AntiVirus software on your machine these links allow you to update both the executable program and virus signature files. The files which you download will give you a more comprehensive program and signature library than you get by just doing the live updates. It took a minute or two to download both nav59xup.exe (12,242KB) and 0711i32.exe (2,191KB). The short download time is no doubt due to the speed of my @Home cable modem. Installation was also fast, but updating the signature files took about 5 minutes. All-in-all time well-spent!
I started with version NAV 5.0 in March. Live updates brought it to Version 5.00.01b. On July 15th, using the Update links I updated both files. After this update I have Version 5.01.01a and virus updates to July 11, 1999 (42,080 viruses) The filename 0711i32.exe should give you a clue to its date. On July 18th, Brad Utschig reported that live updates brought his copy to Version 5.01.03b. It appears to change at least daily.

If you wish, you can go to Symantec's site and update your Norton AntiVirus files from here by clicking on:
Program Update   and   Signature File Update.

Be aware that some site addresses become obsolete. These were current in July 1999, but if unavailable go to the "root" site (e.g. symantec.com) and navigate from there.
