Q. What's this Internet2 I keep hearing about?
J.P. House, La Trobe. Pa. A. I know what you're thinking: Just when you started getting used to this Internet, they had to go and come up with another one. But don't despair. The Internet 2 is a superfast version of the Internet. It's available only to universities, government agencies and a handful of corporations right now. |
The idea behind this
network is to try out new technologies that will enhance the research
capabilities of the groups that are using it now and to eventually
transfer those technologies to the Internet we all know and love.
Some of the stuff Internet2 is offering--such as the ability to transmit full-screen, live video between two points won't be available to the rest of us for at least three to five years. So much for progress. In the meantime, you can read more about promising project at www.internet2.edu. |
