CD-R& JAZ Drive Differences
from Ask Gina, Access Magazine, http://www.accessmagazine.com/
    Q. What is the difference between a CD-R and a Jaz drive?
         Stacy Spence, San Mateo, CA

A. Both types of storage devices are "removable." That means that they let you write to compact discs or cartridges that you can pull in and out of the device, just like floppy disks. But that's where the similarities end.

Jaz drives let you save up to 2GB of information on Jaz cartridges almost as quickly as you can on your computer's hard disk.
Because you can save and erase files as many times as you need to, they make sense for people who are always running out of hard disk space.

CD-R is short for Compact Disc Recordable. Here, you save data to CDs that look exactly like audio CDs or CD-ROMs. But you can't erase them, and the drives are much slower than other storage devices.

That's why CD-R drives are best for those of you who want to store things permanently--making a "party mix" of your favorite audio, for example, or backing up information on your computer.
