Installing PageMaker 4.0by Carl Tenning, TOG PageMaker 4 was released for Windows 3.1. Installing it on a Windows ME machine, I encountered an unusual problem. I could not copy and paste into PageMaker from applications like Microsoft Word or Outlook Express. The only application that would paste into PageMaker was Notepad, so I first had to paste into Notepad and then copy from Notepad and paste into PageMaker. Another problem I had was getting my laser printer to justify the right hand side of the column. PageMaker would show the text justified to both left and right edges, but my Samsung QwikLaser 6050 printer would not print the space paddings to justify the right edge. I tried changing many of the printer settings, like changing fonts, changing spooled data from RAW to EMF, and bypassing the print spooler directly to the printer, all to no avail. I did not think that the problem was in PageMaker because if I print to my ink jet printer I get the right justification. I finally found the solution. It was in the printer setup. My laser printer emulates the HP LaserJet 5. As such, the default graphics mode was set to HP-GL/2. The other option was "Raster". After changing this setting to Raster, another option appeared under Truetype Fonts, "Trutype as Graphics". After selecting this setting, PageMaker finally printed with the right column edge justified. |
