UPDATE
Finally, Defrag Relief!
by Bob Thomson, Tacoma Open Group

I hadn't been able to run Defrag since last April when I got my 10 Gig Pentium III machine, running Windows 98. Everytime I tried, it got to about 3% and started over, occasionally telling me something was trying to write to the disk. Yes, I had disabled Norton Antivirus and the Task Scheduler, and shut down everything else in the SysTray, but still no luck.

I followed the procedure suggested in the article If Your Disk Defragmenter Won't Work, in this issue, about using msconfig and voila!--Defrag worked! I took an hour and 40 minutes to defrag my highly fragmented, 10 Gig hard drive, but it did it!

When I mentioned that this solved my Defrag problem to Dave Rowe he suggested that perhaps I also had a screen saver that was still working, even though I had shut everything else down. Of course that is possible. I do have the SETI program set up as a screen saver, even though my system is energy efficient and shuts down when not in use anyway. Next time I Defrag, I'll shut down the screen saver as well, and see if Defrag works without using the msconfig technique.

    (PS: It didn't. - rjt).

Registry Clean Up
In the Beginner's section, we have included an article which we intended to print a couple of months ago, but it got bumped for something else. Easy Cleaner, one of the programs mentioned in the article, was
offered in January as a Disk-of-the-Month. No mention was made at that time of its use in concert with the other programs mentioned here. Those of you who picked it up should read the author's claim in the article that one program alone does not do a complete job, but the combination of three does. We also have RegClean 4.1 in our library for those of you who don't yet have it.

It may be a stretch to include this article in the Beginner's section, but if you are unsure of yourself in following the procedures outlined, call someone in the User Group for help, or at least for moral support.

Seek And Ye Shall Find
If you haven't visited toggle.org for a while, take another look. Webmaster Ray Mills has added a Search capability on the Home page of the Website. Remember that article about spreadsheets you wanted to go back to? Which issue was it in? Now you can use the new Search capability to find all references to the key word you enter. There is a limit to how far back you can go. We start with the June 1999 issue of the TOGGLE on the Website.

Extra! Extra!
If you members received more than one copy of the TOGGLE newsletter this month, spread the word--give one to a friend and bring them along or encourage them to come to the next monthly meeting. As you know, newcomers are always welcome especially if they sign up as new members. If you mail it, place a stamp over the Bulk Mailing Permit and tape the edges. If you need more copies let the TOGGLE Editor know.
