UPDATE
Delete Sensibly
In the first Beginner's article, author, Jennifer Fulton, who usually gives good sensible advice, touts a utility program called Space Hound that sniffs out "twin" or duplicate files you don't need--and suggests you get rid of them.

But hold on, be sure you don't need them before you delete them. You may be surprised at the number of README.TXT, and other files of that ilk, you have on your computer. We can guarantee you all those README files, even though they have the same name, are not all duplicates. DLL files--maybe--but think before you delete all those other look-alikes.

You would be wise to note the directory from which you are deleting a file and saving the fileyou wish to delete to a floppy, Zip or CD-R disk so you can restore it later if needed. Such a technique was described, for .DLL files, in thearticle "Registry Clean Up" on page 3 of the March 2000 TOGGLE. If DLLs seem to be a problem, take a look at "Troubleshooting DLL Conflicts" on page 7 and, maybe, download a shareware version of DLL Checker.
Turn Off Windows 9x's Print & File Sharing
If you attended the February meeting and heard the presentation on Firewalls, you will remember the stress put on turning OFF Print and File Sharing. This feature of Windows 9x is intended for use on a private network, and may be very useful in that context. But if this feature is left active while you are on the Internet, which is, after all, just one huge network, you are announcing that you are willing to share the contents of your hard drive with the whole world. There are nasty people out there--some are pranksters, some are worse. Unless your really, really need it, turn Print and File Sharing OFF and save yourself some grief. See how to do it in Beginner's second article.
