| Long Filenames on Floppies | |

Have you ever copied a
file to a floppy with a long file name? Do you remember your surprise
and frustration when you found out that the name was changed to the 8.3
naming convention? MSDos strikes again! Well I have found away around
this little aggravation--ZIP it. You zip the file or files that you want
to transport via floppy disk. Zipping a file is easy with 9X and
Winzip.
Open Explorer and find the appropriate file/s. If you are selecting more than one file hold down the Ctrl key and select the files with the left mouse button. Next |
release the Ctrl key if you had multiple
files and press the right mouse button. A menu will pop up with one of
the selections being Add to ZIP, select this option. A requester will
pop up asking you if this is the file name and place where you want to
create your new ZIP file. You can change any of this by typing in
different options. Copy your new zip file to the floppy and you are
ready to go. When you unzip the files on the new computer, the long file
name will be intact. No "~?" complicating your file name. I wonder who
thought of that annoyance any way?
