After only 19 months of
hype, the first Bluetooth products are finally [May 2001-ed] starting to
ship. What's the fuss, you ask? Well, for one thing, Bluetooth promises
cheap and convenient wireless connections. Bluetooth chips which use
radio signals to transfer data over short distances (about 33 feet) [10
meters-ed], can be added to a wide range of devices, including cell
phones, printers, laptops and digital cameras.

If you had a
Bluetooth-enabled cellular phone and laptop, for example, you could make
a wireless connection to the Internet. Or with a Bluetooth chip inside a
digital camera, you could theoretically beam photos to your computer.
Don't get too excited, though. Despite the
buzz, there are still relatively few products available that actually
use the technology.
