PING!
We realize every member won't be all that interested in the article on the origin of Ping--the word which entered the language during WWII to describe the sound of a Sonar bouncing off a submarine target, and subsequently entered the world of computer jargon when Mike Muuss wrote a little piece of diagnostic code to trace a signal sent to evoke a response (or echo) in a computer network. He called it ping. The article seemed to us to have enough enlightening material to be included in the newsletter--of course, we've been wrong before. If it's not your cup of tea, skip it. Otherwise, have a ball tapping all those website resources. The easiest way to tap those resources is to log on to either the TOGGLE website and read the April 2002 newsletter or go to the source of the article at www.ping127001.com and click on the active links. Happy TapPING! Tips With a Smile On pages 4 and 6 you will find a couple of tips from the same source, www.thelaughin.com. When you get there if you click on Computer Tips it will take you to the area from which these tips came. Take a look at this site to see if you want to mark it as one of your favorites. There's some good stuff there as well as a smile or two. |
Local Recycler
Dave Rowe writes: "If you need to get rid of (recycle) old computer equipment, here is a local recycler in Lakewood. www.allaboutpcsalvage.com/ index.html" They handle computers from both companies and individuals. If you wish to avoid contributing to the glut of outdated computer equipment filling the local landfill, you might consider giving it to a recycler like these folks. Something For The Ergonomically Challenged and Disabled On page 12 we announce the program presentation for this month. We will take a look at some of the Input/Output devices, such as keyboards and pointing devices available on the market, some of which take an unusual approach to the needs of those with repetitive stress injuries (RSI) and other disabilities. We will do a repeat showing of some beneficial Carpal Tunnel exercises you can do--also displayed on our website www.toggle.org in Bob's Corner. We also mention some screen enhancements, like improved type size and contrast as well as audio readout for those with impaired vision. Remember to Reset Clocks Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday April 7th,2002 so the April meeting of Tacoma Open Group is on: Monday, April 8th at 7:00pm Daylight Savings Time |
