My son had his Win98
system working fine on the Internet. Then, one day his mouse would not
work when Windows was loaded. It would work part way through the re-boot
but not when Windows was fully loaded. We went through all the usual
steps such as deleting the mouse and letting Windows find it again etc.,
etc.--all to no avail. Then he mentioned that he hadn't been satisfied
with his sound card so he told me he reseated it. Still the bells didn't
go off--although I asked if he might have inadvertently dislodged
something else. Finally, he took the sound card out and the mouse worked
again.

What he hadn't mentioned
was that in reseating the sound card he also moved it to another
slot--so apparently the addresses were all wrong.
Thus:
1. When retracing steps taken don't leave out any steps and
2. When trouble shooting make only one change at a time.
