Microsoft Office 2003 Raffle

As mentioned last month TOG President Ray Mills has generously donated a full licensable copy of Microsoft Office 2003 for the Tacoma Open Group to raffle off--with the funds so obtained to be added to the projector fund. This software retails for over $300 so is something worth having. Tickets are available at $1 each and will be sold over the next month in order to bring in funds as close to the retail price as possible. With this amount we should finally be in a position to purchase a club-owned projector for use at our meetings.

Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 disk features MSWord, Excel, Outlook(R), Access and PowerPoint. It also includes Publisher 2003, support for XML and Information Rights Management as wellas InfoPathTM 2003. A second CD contains Microsoft Office OneNoteTM 2003

We are closing in on a projector purchase so get you tickets now since the drawing will occur either this month or next month at the latest.

Thank Goodness for Web
Again this month we draw on that "Font of all wisdom" the Internet for articles of interest and instruction.

Beginners will find an instructive article on the mysteries of computer file structures entitled Why Can't I Open This File?

Those who want to build their own network will find the second article in the series on the subject in the Hardware section.

In the General Interest section K. Joyce Macdonald concludes her two-part article on her experiences as a hearing-disabled person coping with the computer-oriented world. In many ways it liberated her.

In the Operating System section the article Preventive Maintenance - System Backup and Recovery admonishes those of us who delay that not backing up irreplaceable information is risking losing it all in a system crash. Read it and take heed!

Articles by Two of Our Own
Being a small group, with a 12 page newsletter we depend on other authors to fill our pages with pertinent and timely articles as mentioned above.. However, this month we carry two articles written by our own members.

In Computer Problem Mission Carl Tenning describes problems with a new member's computer and how he coped with them to find satisfactory solutions.

In the article titled How I Lost--Then Regained Access to DOS Programs, your editor, who is using Windows XP, describes his frustration with the loss of access to DOS programs that he uses regularly. In the article he describes how he found a solution to this specific problem and suggests that the technique might be used to solve similar problems.
