Backing Up MSN E-mail
by Carl Tenning, Tacoma Open Group
Under MSN e-mail, messages that appear on the server can be dragged to a folder on the local hard drive. Thus instead of taking up space on the server, which has limited user capacity, they are stored on the user hard drive instead. But what if the MSN application on the local computer were to become corrupted such that it had to be uninstalled and reinstalled to be recovered. All of the e-mail stored locally would be lost.
It might be a good idea to periodically backup the locally stored e-mail messages. MSN has a Wizard for this purpose. Go to the "Help and Settings" pull down menu and click on "Settings", then click on "E-mail" in the left-hand pane. This opens a page titled "E-mail Settings". From the options, choose "Import or export e-mail, copy e-mail, or import contacts". On the next page, choose "Copy e-mail". This starts the Wizard which will lead you through a procedure to copy your local e-mail to a file on your hard drive which can then be archived to CD-ROM.
