| Windows Millennium Update Problem | |

Windows Automatic Update on my Windows Millennium computer has persistently tried to repeatedly load the same updates. After completing the download it asks permission to install the update. I click OK and it seems to install. However, at the end of the installation it says I must reboot the computer, which I do and during the reboot I get the following message:
"Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1: %2" Checking the Windows Update it says that the update has installed successfully, but a few days later, the Automatic Update begins downloading it again. This has happened repeatedly and I have been seeking a solution for about a year. Usually I do a search on Google for something related to the problem and it has not been until just recently that I did find the solution. Fortunately someone else has also had the problem |
and had the courtesy to post the solution on a bulletin board. I found the following link to a Microsoft site giving the solution:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;283069& Product=winme The solution is detailed in Microsoft Article 283069. It says the problem occurs when the _RESTORE folder is larger than the folder should be and the contents of the file Wininit.err indicates that the program cannot write to the _RESTORE folder. Note that the _RESTORE folder can only be viewed by setting Folder Options, View Tab, Advanced Settings group box and checking "Show hidden files and folders". The resolution essentially involves deleting the _RESTORE folder and resetting the "Disable System Restore" along with several reboots. |
