TOG Web Page and Java Runtime Environment
by Carl Tenning, Tacoma Open Group for Microcomputers

One of my computers developed some difficulty displaying the TOG web page: http://www.toggle.org/

A pop-up would appear stating that the web page was requesting a version of Java, different than was installed on this computer and did I want to open a new browser window. Every time I clicked on "Yes" a new browser window opened with yet the same error message and each time creating a new browser window. Clicking on "No" skipped the new browser window, but the TOG web page would not display the scrolling text box. I finally decided that maybe I had a corrupted installation of Java and that maybe I should uninstall it and start over again. Going to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs, I saw that there were five versions of Java installed, each 111 to 135 Megabytes. I uninstalled all but the two latest versions, Version 6, and tried the TOG web page again. This time it worked like it should with no error message.

Old Java Programs
by Thomas Stepanek , TOG Librarian

Here is a new tip I just asked Ray to add to our website under the Uncle Tommy Tips section:

Old Java programs using up hard drive space (Sept 07)

Did you know that old Java programs remain on your hard drive, even after Java auto updates or you download the latest Java update. Check your list of installed programs by going to Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs. Move through the list of programs until you see the Java program entries*. Do you have more than one Java program installed? If so, it is a big waste of hard drive space. The average Java program is over 100 MB large; yes, I said over 100 MB. The only Java program you should have installed is: JavaT 6 Update 2. Remove any other Java programs. My list contained three Java programs, two of which were each over 110 MB. I removed all but the one mentioned above with no resulting issues.
